A tiling session that is just a package away.

Gridline is an optional Wayland tiling desktop session for Ubuntu LTS, inspired by Omarchy and Regolith, delivered exclusively as Debian packages. Install it, pick it at the login screen, and your stock GNOME session stays installed, selectable, and supported as the fallback.

sudo apt install gridline-desktop

No install script. No post-install download. No manual file copying. Removing the packages returns the machine to its prior state.

Why it exists

If you already use Ubuntu, work in the terminal, saw Omarchy, and want that without leaving the LTS base or assembling the stack by hand forever, Gridline is the third option. It is a personal project with a small audience by design: one compositor boundary behind an adapter, every binary from the Ubuntu archive, and configuration as the product.

How it works

A GDM session entry runs a launcher that asks the active compositor adapter what the session requires. A missing required capability ends the launch with its name in the journal and returns the seat to the login screen, where Ubuntu is still there. The session refuses to start as a partial desktop you cannot explain.

Status

Early development. The session entry, launcher, and Hyprland adapter are built and verified in a VM; configuration defaults, portal integration, and the command menu are on the roadmap. Follow the source repository for progress.
